Spring cleaning has a bad reputation, and fairly so. The traditional version is a marathon nobody actually enjoys. This version is different. It's room by room, with breaks, with music, with the assumption that the goal is a calmer home, not a sterile one.
Living Room
- Wash or vacuum every throw pillow and blanket
- Lift cushions and vacuum what's underneath
- Dust the tops of frames, the TV, and any ceiling fan
- Wash the inside of the windows and wipe the sills
- Donate any decor object you no longer love
Kitchen
- Empty and wipe every drawer and shelf in the fridge
- Toss expired pantry goods
- Clean the oven (see our overnight method)
- Descale the kettle and coffee maker with vinegar
- Wash all the dish towels and oven mitts at once
Bedrooms
- Flip and rotate the mattress
- Wash mattress protectors, pillow protectors, and duvet covers
- Switch heavy bedding for lighter spring layers
- Donate one bag of clothing per closet
- Wipe the inside of the closet shelves
Bathrooms
- Replace shower curtain liners
- Wash all the bath mats and hand towels
- Toss expired makeup and skincare
- Re-caulk anywhere the caulk has yellowed
- Wash the inside of the medicine cabinet
Entryway and Outdoor
- Pack away winter coats and boots
- Hose down outdoor mats and seat cushions
- Sweep the porch, balcony, or front step
- Wipe down the front door
- Plant one new pot of something living near the door
Spring is not a deadline. It's an invitation to start fresh, slowly, and gently.
Spread It Across a Weekend
Living room and entryway on Saturday morning. Kitchen on Saturday afternoon. Bedrooms on Sunday morning. Bathrooms on Sunday afternoon. That's the whole reset, with breaks built in. By Sunday evening your home will feel quietly, beautifully, ready for the new season.
