The Bathroom Deep Clean Checklist (And the 30-Minute Version)

Two checklists: one for a real seasonal deep clean, and one for the quick weekly version that keeps the deep clean from ever becoming an emergency.

Bathrooms are the room everyone wants clean and nobody wants to clean. The trick I've found, after years of getting it wrong, is to have two different checklists: a real deep clean once a season, and a 30-minute weekly version that keeps things from ever getting truly bad.

The 30-Minute Weekly Clean

Run this once a week, ideally the same day every week. Mine is Saturday morning, before I do anything else, while the house is still quiet.

  • Spray the shower and tub with cleaner and let it sit
  • Wipe down the counter and sink
  • Clean the mirror with a microfiber cloth
  • Toilet exterior, then interior with brush
  • Wipe the toilet seat, lid, and base
  • Sweep the floor
  • Go back and rinse the shower
  • Quick mop with a damp cloth or spray mop
  • Empty the trash and replace the bag
  • Refold the hand towel

That's it. Thirty minutes, every surface touched, every week. The cumulative effect of doing this consistently is that the deep clean below becomes a refresh instead of a rescue mission.

The Seasonal Deep Clean

Block off a Saturday morning, three or four times a year. Pour something nice to drink and put on a good playlist. This is the version that handles everything the weekly clean intentionally skips.

Shower and Tub

Remove everything from the shower. Soak the showerhead in a bag of vinegar for one hour to dissolve mineral buildup. Scrub the grout with a baking soda paste and an old toothbrush. Wash or replace the shower curtain liner. Re-caulk anywhere the caulk has turned brown or pulled away from the wall.

Toilet

Beyond the usual interior and exterior, lift the seat and clean the hinges, where surprising amounts of buildup hide. Wipe behind the toilet and along the base. If the bowl has rings, leave a cup of vinegar in it overnight before scrubbing.

Sink and Counter

Empty everything off the counter. Wipe everything down before returning it. Clean the faucet base where toothpaste and water spots collect. Use an old toothbrush around the drain. Pour boiling water followed by baking soda and vinegar down the drain to clear minor clogs.

Mirror and Light Fixtures

Mirror gets a full wipe with glass cleaner. Light fixtures get dusted, including the inside of glass shades, which collect a surprising amount of grime.

Cabinets and Drawers

This is where the seasonal version really pays off. Empty one drawer at a time. Toss expired products (yes, makeup expires). Wipe the drawer interior. Reorganize as you put things back. Most people are shocked at how much they're storing that they no longer use.

Floor and Baseboards

Sweep, then mop. Get into the corners. Wipe baseboards with a damp cloth, which collects more dust than you'd believe in a humid room.

Final Touches

Fresh towels in the towel bar. New roll of toilet paper visible. A small plant or a sprig of eucalyptus if you have one. These last details are the difference between clean and welcoming.

A weekly thirty minutes prevents a quarterly four-hour disaster. The math always works out.

Final Thoughts

Print both checklists and stick them inside a cabinet door. The hardest part of bathroom cleaning is remembering everything that needs to be done. With the lists in front of you, the bathroom stops being a project and starts being a routine.
